Spring semester is in full swing at UW-Whitewater and for the Department of Marketing! Our February edition of the Department of Marketing Newsletter highlights recent achievements and our student, faculty and sponsor spotlights. Marketing and Sales Career Fair – 29 companies participated with job and internship opportunities! Perfect Pitch Sales Competition – Approximately 170 students participated and $2550 was awarded in prize money from our sponsors: Consolidated Electrical Distributors and Impact Networking. Partners in the Classroom – students interact one-on-one with representatives from our sponsoring companies. Student Spotlight – Jason Precia, most recent recipient of the Richard Telfer – AMA Minority Business Student Scholarship. Faculty Spotlight – Yushan Zhao, Professor and Chair of the Department Assessment Committee. Partner Spotlight – Brian Robinson and Jason Gardner from C.H. Robinson.

We are past the halfway mark for Fall semester! Students, faculty and AMA are keeping very busy and already have many accomplishments. Our second edition of the Marketing Department newsletter has highlights from the AMA 10th Annual Regional Conference, the Institute for Sales Excellence, as well as student, faculty and alumni spotlights.

The UWW chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) hosted their 10th Annual Regional Conference on Friday, October 13th. This year the theme of the conference was Experiential Marketing. Keynote speakers included representatives from GMR Marketing, Summerfest, the Milwaukee Bucks, and Tito’s Vodka.
Over 450 students from 26 different AMA chapters attended, coming from as far away as Germany. In addition to attending the keynote presentations, students competed in a variety of marketing competitions. There were five competitions: Sales, Mock Interview, Elevator Pitch, Digital Marketing, and a Marketing Case. All students that competed had the chance of winning almost $7,000 in prizes. There was also a career fair that allowed students to network with over 40 employers coming from a variety of fields of business.
AMA’s 10th Annual Regional Conference was another great success this year!
The students and faculty in the Department of Marketing are in full swing with career fairs, sales competitions, conferences in addition to coursework!
Recently, we held our annual Partners in the Classroom event. This is a special opportunity for hundreds of students to directly meet with over 30 of our local sponsors and partners. Many are sales, retail and digital marketing students seeking jobs and internships. Following the event is our popular Sales Team “Meet and Greet.” This was another opportunity to mingle with sales students in a more informal setting.
The first sales competition of the year was held last week. The Perfect Pitch competition had over 50 judges participate from our partnering companies. The Perfect Pitch is a 45-90 second pitch that demonstrates yourself to a prospective new employer. Over a hundred students participated! Student winners receive monetary awards. Here are the top 5 winners:

In June, the UW-Whitewater chapter of AMA organized the 2nd Annual Richard Telfer-AMA Minority Business Student Scholarship Golf Outing.
Dr. Richard Telfer served UW-Whitewater for many years, including as Chancellor. “Dick” has long been a champion for students of color. In honor of his service, the UW-W AMA chapter hosts the Richard Telfer-AMA Minority Business Student Golf Outing. All proceeds go to Minority Business Students, priority given to those pursuing marketing and sales careers.
There were over 85 people in attendance, including AMA students, Marketing Department faculty, and many sponsors from local companies such as Sherwin Williams, C.H. Robinson, Arien’s Company, Victor Envelope, Impact, Aerotek, Primex, Acurite, Federated Insurance, TEKSystems and Lueder Financial Group.
The event was held at the Stoughton Country Club with some friendly team competition raffle prizes and an auction! Thank you to everyone that participated and made the event successful!
